[01:43] Almost like a new... Think about it as like the equivalent of the nuclear code, right? Yeah. And... [01:48] Arjuna had it this this this particular character in Mahabharata Arjuna and [01:53] He was allowed to use it. And then this other person was this basically Arjuna had a teacher named Drona. [02:01] And... [02:02] Drona had a son named Ashwatthama. And Ashwatthama was always jealous of Arjuna. [02:09] Arjuna was not Drona's son but [02:11] He was his model disciple. [02:13] And so Drona passed on the secret of the Brahmastra to him. [02:16] And, um, um... [02:19] Drona's son also wanted it? [02:21] But because it was his son, he also passed on the secret to his son, even though the son wasn't as good as Arjuna. And during the war, Arjuna and Drona fought on the opposite sides. [02:32] It's just circumstances. And his dad died, Ashwatthama's dad, the teacher died in the war. [02:41] And so the son got mad and like... [02:43] unleashed the Brahmastra [02:45] And Lord Krishna had to come and save him. [02:48] save the planet to not [02:50] not get that destruction force. How old is the Mahabharata? [02:56] Again, there's a lot of different opinions on this, so I don't actually know for sure. My understanding is it's at least 1,500 to 2,500 years old.
[03:05] like like [03:06] thousand five hundred years ago is the minimum [03:09] 2,500 years ago is the maximum. So it happened in some period in that 1,000-year time frame between that. [03:16] and um [03:17] So [03:17] There's still like, it's still unclear if like a lot of it is just like, you know, being... [03:23] and what actually happened was just a war between [03:27] Kinds. [03:29] There were two groups of people, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. [03:34] Each side thought they were fighting for... [03:36] their own rights and justice, but at the end of the day, you can... [03:41] crudely understand it as like... [03:43] essentially fight for the kingdom. [03:45] Um, [03:46] Basically, they were like... [03:48] There was a previous generation [03:50] and two brothers, and both the brothers had a bunch of kids, and those kids were warring to get... [03:56] The next in line. [03:57] And, um, [03:58] That ended up being like a massive war and a bunch of other allies fought on each side. [04:03] And so many amazing weapons were used as part of the war. And a lot of these weapons are like... [04:10] extremely, like describe an extreme level of detail. [04:14] That is pretty incredible. Like, there's a lot of detail around, like, targeted weapons. So you could precisely identify a target and just shoot at that. [04:24] And then... Does it explain, like, what the weapon is? Yeah, so... [04:28] There's one weapon called a Divyastra where you can just... [04:31] specifically target any particular person or group, [04:35] And it would just...
[04:36] automatically direct itself and do it, almost like a semi-autonomous [04:40] weapon. And then Lord Krishna had this [04:43] Um... [04:44] a weapon called the Sudarshan Chakra. It's basically a discus. [04:47] And then you can just... [04:48] release it and it will go and specifically identify somebody and [04:52] chop off their head and come back to your [04:53] Right? It self-directs itself. So what I was amazed by is how... [05:00] interesting it is in terms of [05:04] Um... [05:05] all the autonomy... [05:06] in the weapons, semi-autonomy or autonomy, where... [05:09] The weapons could just be directed at people or, like, directed at... [05:12] a group of soldiers, and it would just go and do its job and come back to the wielder. And there were so many different astras, Divyasra, Varunasra, Nagasra. Ramasra is obviously the [05:23] ultimate [05:24] the hydrogen bomb equivalent? [05:26] And all of these are described in a lot of detail and who has access to it. And, of course, it's mythologized, so it's described as these arrows in the back of your shoulders. But you could understand it as somebody having just access to a lot of weapons. And then whoever was powerful would go capture and colonize and gain power. [05:48] And, um... [05:50] Essentially a fight between a group of cousins. That's the bottom line of that story. Now, if we think of history as this linear progression from caveman to us, and we hear about autonomous weapons that were written in the Mahabharata somewhere around 2,000 plus years ago, we go, well, mythology. Yeah. But…

[06:09] If there's been some sort of rise and fall of civilization, if there has been catastrophic, whatever it is, asteroid impacts, shifting of the poles, whatever it is, it's caused great disasters. You can imagine that these people are remembering a time where there was some sort of very advanced civilization. And this is what they're describing. [06:39] Evidence that they had some technology like the pyramids of Giza and stuff? Like how did you do that? There's some technology involved, right? Yeah. But we don't have evidence of the technology. But if we did, if we knew for a fact, you would look at the Mahabharata and go, oh, this is history. They're just explaining it in a kind of crude contemporary way for the time. Arrows instead of semi-autonomous drones with exploding heads on them. Yeah. I mean that's what we have now. [07:10] Hydrogen bomb. Semi-autonomous and autonomous drones. I mean, they have... [07:15] They have autonomous fighter jets now. They don't need people anymore. We're in that area right now. [09:42] The level of detail with which they describe all these weapons [09:45] and who had access, [09:47] different levels of access. [09:49] the status required to have access, [09:52] and how it was used in the wars. [09:55] different formations of the soldiers. [09:58] they had all these crazy formation structures like [10:01] forming the army like a lotus, forming the army like a [10:06] you know there's something called a chakravya like a like [10:09] Literally, it has to have concentric circles. [10:11] So you cannot actually get into the innermost circle without... [10:15] going through the outer circles, and then you can get killed by each of the flanks whenever you're trying to enter in. And the secret of how to actually break into these vijuhas, vijuhas means formations, [10:26] was only known to a few people. [10:28] And it's incredible. You could say, okay, somebody had to be extremely... [10:36] to have that sort of like... [10:38] visualizations and imaginations of describing a story like that and [10:42] And obviously, like, Tolkien has done an amazing job with a lot of the rings. [10:46] and creating so much detail. At the same time, a lot of it actually coming through in real life in some form. [10:52] Again, [10:53] Not exactly the same weapons, but similar style weapons. [10:56] makes you wonder, [10:58] Was there actually something around then? And people have tried excavations in all these areas. There's like two main areas in the Mahabharata. Hasinapur was the name of the kingdom.
[11:07] And people have done excavations around there and have found some artifacts that might date back to those years. But there are also some details that are described in the epics that don't quite align with it. [11:19] For example, all the men, all the main warriors... [11:24] in that era were described as very tall, very big, [11:29] seven, eight feet, whatever. I don't even know exact numbers. [11:36] But – [11:37] studies by archaeologists also say that [11:41] People who lived in those years in those regions were probably not more than six feet tall. [11:46] So it's not clear exactly what happened. [11:49] what was correct, what was not correct. And, you know, we just have to keep probing more. But I find the idea fascinating to think of, like, what could have existed in sacred texts, [11:58] That was... [11:59] only partially communicated to the next generation and having a lot of like reinterpretations. Another thing that is very interesting to think about is Vedic math. [12:08] So... [12:10] Basically, Vedic math is like a branch of mathematics that... [12:15] Some people in India are grown up learning. I read it myself too. And some people actually practice it. [12:21] just to be sharper at mental math for people, [12:24] doing their exams [12:25] like GMAT and things like that, GRE. [12:30] Um, [12:31] it has like a line in the Vedas that says, Oh, like one from the last digit, two from the first digit, whatever, you know, so many different ways of multiplying two different numbers, like 97 times 96. Oh, like subtract the last two digits, put it in the right, multiply the first digits, put it in the left. That's the, that's the result. And, um,
[12:48] Then you wonder like, oh wait, the Rig Veda is so old, it's the oldest sacred text out there. [12:55] How is it describing computation? [12:58] That feels... [13:00] Right. Very unreal. Like, did they actually know? [13:03] or understand advanced forms of computation, [13:06] Even back in those days... [13:08] And how old is Rig Veda? Um... [13:12] I don't exactly know how old it is. Why don't we put that into perplexity? [13:16] Yeah, let's do that. Let's find out. Yeah. [13:20] Yeah, it is. [13:23] Technically the oldest sacred text out there. [13:27] And so what's interesting is I wonder – [13:32] How old the stories were by the time they were written down? [13:36] Like how much of it is relayed person to person, right? [13:40] For years and years, just like the Bible, before it's ever actually written down. Scholars usually date the composition of the Rig Veda to about 1500 to 1200 BCE. [13:51] So its oldest layer is roughly 3,200, 3,700 years old today. [13:57] Like, I... [13:58] If there really was, like... [14:00] Every ancient culture has a story of a flood. Everyone, they all have an apocalypse. And my birth had the same thing. [14:08] Mar Barat had the same thing where there was a big like... [14:12] Almost like a tsunami-like thing. I don't exactly know what it was called, but that was the collapse of... [14:18] Lord Krishna's kingdom, Dwaraka.
[14:20] After the war, a lot of people died, but some people survived. [14:23] even those who survived got wiped out by a calamity or, or like some kind of like a, [14:29] fight among themselves and most of the people who participated in that era actually died [14:35] Here it is. The primordial, how do you say it? Manu? [14:39] Yeah. Manu flood classic Hindu grape flood myth where the righteous king Manu is warned by a divine fish about an imminent deluge that will destroy humanity. [14:50] He builds a boat, loads it with his family. It's like knowing the ark. It's the same thing with seeds and animals. [14:58] Ties it to the horn of the god in fish form, which tows the boat to safety until the waters recede and the world is repopulated. They all have the same story. Yeah. That's what's really crazy. There is a concept in – [15:13] Hindu philosophy called the Yugas. Mm-hmm [15:16] I'm reading a book about it right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. [15:20] There's like different yugas and yugas are like thousands of years and... [15:23] The concept is that you guys keep cycling around. [15:26] And so we are in the Kali Yuga right now. [15:30] And before that was a Dwapar Yuga. That's when... [15:33] Most of Mahabharata happened, and before that, there was a Treta Yoga where the Ramayana happened. [15:37] And before that, there was another yuga. What is next after Kali Yuga? No, there is nothing next after Kali Yuga. It goes back to the first one. I forget the name of the first yuga. Because the interpretation that I'm reading is that we're not in Kali Yuga anymore. And that Kali Yuga ended in the 1900s and Dwapar Yuga started then. No, no. We are in Kali Yuga right now. 100%. 100%. So why do people have different interpretations? Is that true? Yeah, there's like a guru interpretation.
[16:07] this interpretation that Kali Yuga ended in the 1900s. Okay. And that we're in [16:13] Moving on. [16:14] Interesting. Yeah. But I don't know who's right because it's an enormous cycle, right? The cycles of humanity. Yeah. Thousands of years. Yeah. Thousands of years. [16:22] So, yeah. So these are the four Yugas. Um... [16:26] And, um, [16:31] So why do people have different interpretations? Let me tell you the book I'm reading. Yeah. [16:38] Uh... See if this book is discredited, young Jamie. It is, um... [16:46] It's by a guy named David Steinowitz. [16:55] Stein... [16:56] Steinmetz, David Steinmetz. The book is called The Yugas. Interesting. Interesting. [17:01] Yeah, I mean... [17:02] The problem is when someone's got their own interpretation or some guru's interpretation, it doesn't totally align. [17:09] It's hard to know who's right and who's wrong. So there's like one guy's interpretation that this guy is going off of. I guess the difference might be that he thinks the yuga cycle is 24,000 years, whereas...
[17:45] I think it's probably much longer than that. [17:47] Yeah. [17:49] Four yugas together is 4,320,000 years. You know what's really nutty? Yeah. One of the really nutty things is – [18:00] both in the ancient Sumerian texts and in some of the ancient Egyptian texts. There's depictions before the flood of people who reigned for thousands of years as kings. [18:14] And it's common. [18:15] And it's also – they're referenced multiple times in different scripts that are from different parts of what was Sumer at the time. It's really weird because they take it as established history once it gets to a certain age, once they get into whatever the age is where they can verify that this person was the king for a certain period of time. But it's all in the same text as people that reign for 6,000 years. Yeah. [18:42] It's weird. And then one of them just wipes out the whole thing. Yeah. And... [18:47] I mean, this is also somewhat like... [18:49] tangentially related to... [18:52] Um... [18:53] The Fermi Paradox... [18:55] You know, like if you assume all these things are happening on Earth itself, that entire civilizations are getting wiped out. [19:02] And we always wonder, you've explored this topic the most recently. [19:07] And... [19:08] Married Aliens. [19:09] Right. [19:11] There are different arguments that, like, okay, like... [19:14] The reason we haven't quite found that is because...

I mean, there's almost too many to count, but there's the possibility that they are observing and that they don't want to interfere and that we are on some sort of evolutionary cycle, cycle of cultural evolution, civilization evolution. And one of the things about this, the crazy ages that come from the Sumerian text and from the ancient, the hieroglyphs that depict the Zeptet, how do you say it? Zepteti? No. [21:34] How am I saying that? [21:35] What is that text, that ancient? Remember we talked about it with Zahi Hawass and he denied its existence? Yeah. [21:44] Zep Tepe? Is that it? Either way, you're dealing with these kings that reign for thousands and thousands of years. But why is it that all these people have these stories that align with this timeline that's pre-flood? [22:25] It's all like the same story. Yeah. And then if you're talking about... [22:30] these ancient Hindu scriptures that are discussing [22:33] technology that seems remarkably similar to technology that we have today. Yeah. The Vimanos are flying cars, basically.
[22:39] And probably we're going to have 100 years from now or whatever it is. Or we could have gone that way in the past. And it's very entertaining to think of like – [22:48] Let's say something happens to us, right? I don't want anything to happen to us, but let's say something happens to us, and would people really believe we were, like, launching reusable rockets... [22:56] Right. [22:57] Or making FaceTime calls to people in Australia? Yeah. [23:01] Yeah, like even fundamental things like... [23:03] all we are doing today... [23:06] I think it's all incredible. There's a lot of things that [23:09] Could be just technological ideas or maybe people actually had it and the knowledge of it was lost. [23:15] And it's not been documented, it's not been passed along, and so we are skeptical if they ever had it. [23:19] And so we end up reinventing it in different forms again and again and again, and we keep cycling through this process. Well, it also could be that this is the natural progression of human curiosity. The human curiosity and ingenuity always moves into these very particular ways, like what's the best way to defeat my enemies? If we're always going to be territorial primates, we're always going to want to defeat our enemies. We're always going to protect ourselves from being invaded. So we're going to make better – and just with technological innovation, it just goes down the same path. [23:49] Oh, we figure out nuclear bombs. Well, we figure out – well, we don't even have to use an actual plane. We can use an autonomous drone and that delivers it. And then scale upwards and onwards and AI and then also life extension. So if these people were able to make the pyramids, like – there's a lot of –
[24:09] speculation as to the timeline of the pyramids, but let's just say they really built it 2,500 BC. Let's just say back then. What the fuck were they using? [24:20] What did you do? How did you get these stones down from the mountains that were 500 miles away? How about this one? How about that one? We were going to get to that for sure. No, thank you. It's good as any. How about these temples that they find in India that are carved entirely out of one piece of stone? [24:40] What did you do? [24:42] How did you do that? How long ago did this happen? How many of them were buried and then they had to uncover them and then figure out, what is this? Who made it? [24:52] There's no timeline. No one really knows. There's no evidence of tools that were capable of doing this kind of work back then. And they're huge and beautiful and perfect. And they have like acoustic properties and the geometry is fucking fantastic. Yeah. It's nuts, man. It's not just that. All of these temples were actually just built... [25:15] uh... not just [25:16] They were specifically, the locations for them were picked out so that you get the right [25:22] seismic vibrations over there. [25:24] in terms of like [25:25] proximity to the ocean, the gravitational waves from the sun and the moon. People actually made that level of like, look at this man. [25:36] Imagine the undertaking. [25:38] of carving that temple out of the side of a fucking giant piece of rock.
[25:46] Yeah. You screw up one thing and it's over. [25:49] There's no simulations. You just have to build it. What did they have? This is the question. Imagine today if we had to do this. Look, it's possible. This is a possible endeavor. It can be done. But imagine what kind of technology we have to need to map it out, to make sure that it was all precise, that it all aligns. I mean, it's precise within like millimeters. [26:14] From point to point, [26:16] And everything is done out of one piece of stone. [26:20] Like, what did they do? Was it chisels? Did you do that with chisels? That's crazy. How many times do you have to sharpen your fucking chisel? That's nuts. [26:29] Or do you have something completely different? Because some of the more intricate ones, see if you can find these. Some of the crazy ones, inside these temples, there's sculptures that are three-dimensional, and they're carved inside of the sculpture. So there's an outer area, and then there's all these openings, and then inside it's highly detailed. [26:51] How'd you even reach in there? It just says they used chisels and hammers, and I don't think that's [26:55] possible. And careful geometric planning. That's going to be people trying to do that. They see it like this is how much work someone could do in like 12 hours with a hammer and they get nowhere, let alone. [27:08] like perfect and looking good yeah it's nuts man and there's a lot of evidence of stuff like that all over the world which is really weird you have the stuff in peru like saxo and huaman when you look at these stones and it looks like they're melted into place and they're 900 tons like what did you do yeah how did you even get it up there how'd you where'd they get it how'd you get it there how'd you align it perfectly built in only 18 years how do they know that yeah

Well, it's a real problem. History is a real problem. But yeah, it goes back to the thing you were saying, right? They have more compounding relationships. People find them more interesting. And so they compound their relationships over time. And so naturally they end up... [28:59] succeeding, but [29:01] their spirit of inquiry, their [29:03] Intrinsic curiosity is... [29:05] doesn't actually stop once they succeed. It only
[29:09] They just channelize it even more. [29:11] And so that's why it keeps compounding. And I would argue that, like, it's the only quality, it's only, like... [29:16] quality that makes us really human. [29:19] In this world where we can seek a lot of information, get information way faster than ever before, [29:26] It feels like that's that one universal human quality that's existed... [30:06] And I think that's that one quality that's very important. So, um, [30:11] And I feel like it's the oldest thing, it's the only thing that we've known since ancient time. [30:15] being curious? Well, I think it's stimulating to people and genuine curiosity is stimulating to other people. When someone is genuinely curious about something, I become curious about it. I think it's contagious. And I think that it's also an authentic quality. And I think [30:33] There's something about really wanting to know something and being interested in something. And if you're curious, generally you're going to ask more questions about something so you have a deeper understanding of it. So if you're trying to do whatever you're trying to do, a sport, a game, you'll probably get better at it because you're more curious. Because instead of just assuming things, you'll ask more questions, you'll reexamine things. It's one of the most important human qualities. And to me, it's one of the most attractive human qualities.
[31:03] I'm always interested. I'm always like like tell me what you're curious about. I'll tell you what I'm curious about. Let's talk. You know, it's it's [31:10] And this podcast started out genuinely because of – well, it was a lot of just talking shit with friends. But it also led into – like one of my very first guests, actual guests, was Graham Hancock. And it's just because I was curious because I had read Fingerprints of the Gods and I'd seen him talk. I'd seen speeches and I'm like, I want to know. Like what do you know? What do you think is going on? And – [31:33] He's another guy, incredibly curious and absolutely fascinated with his takes on ancient history. He has been talking about this subject a long time. And when he first wrote Fingerprints of the Gods, I think that came out in like, I want to say it was like 97 or 98 or something like that. And I remember reading it and so many of my friends, educated friends, like this is horse shit. Why are you paying attention to this? [32:02] And more and more as time goes on, it's been proven that he's correct. The timelines shifted back. And from the publication of that book, the discovery of Gobekli Tepe and the surrounding area, like it's like, OK, now we realize, well, there was some crazy shit going on at the very least 11,000 years ago. So we pushed civilization back 5,000 years. So like and this is just what we found now. And we keep finding things, keep digging, keep looking.
[32:32] underneath the pyramid with this radio tomography where they're looking under the pyramid that it seems that there's structures under the pyramid. You've seen that stuff? [32:40] I haven't seen that. I had the scientist that's involved in it. He's an Italian guy, Filippo Biondi, and he came on the podcast. Wonderful accent. Almost as good as yours. It was amazing. But he's describing the use of this stuff and that they've used it successfully on known areas in pyramids and other structures. And they can – in fact, there is a – in Italy, there is a particle collider that is underneath a mountain. [33:10] Using this technology, which is satellite-based technology, they get an accurate description of this particle collider. [33:18] I think it's 1200. [33:20] meters underground like how how far is that thing underground [33:25] We'll find out. But it's like deep under stone and they find that they can get an accurate like they can actually give you the dimensions of this particle collider. They have like an image of it. And this same technology is showing that there's these columns underneath the pyramid in various places that are 20 meters wide and they have coils around them. [33:55] It goes almost a kilometer into the ground. There's like this enormous like bottom of it and it seems like it's something that's constructed. And so they're like, okay, well –

[34:33] And this thing can see through all that and get this accurate depiction of this particle collider. And it's showing with multiple scans, not just one, multiple scans and different technology, the same exact images. [34:46] The same exact structures underneath this wall. Right. [41:20] Right, and then you have to go delete all the old ones that are bad ones. Yeah, you'd run out of storage on your phone. Yeah, and then you'd have to buy an external hard drive to keep storing things. Yeah, I remember those days. You'd keep transferring stuff from your phone to the hard disk. [41:32] I remember the old Android phones, you could get an SD card. Yeah. You could slip one of those in there and you could store images on that so you could save space. Yeah. And all that stuff is so vulnerable. Yeah. It's so vulnerable. And, again, if a completely alien society had to come down and find our hard drives and they went a totally different path of technology, they'd have to back engineer, reverse engineer everything that we did, try to figure out, you know, what are we using?
[42:02] What operating system? How does the operating system work? Is it Unix? Is it Linux? What is it? How do they do it? It would be a nightmare. So if there's some massive flood, cataclysm, whatever. [42:23] Some horrific thing that damages all of our electronics, which is totally possible. Just some solar flare, some intense... Damn. Not exactly the mindset of the type of people that would construct something like that. Yeah. So those are the people that found it, and it might have been sitting there for 1,000 years. And then they came along and said, oh, this is cool. Let's live here. [54:22] Okay, but what was the society that lived there before them and where are they and what happened? [54:28] And how'd they do this? And why'd they do it? And why did they have it aligned with the constellations? Like, what were they doing? Yeah. [54:34] Yeah. You need it to have some implicit understanding of [56:39] to build these kind of structures. There's no way you could do it without that. [56:42] Yeah, 100%. And you have to have incredible measurement tools, not just the actual mathematics. [56:49] Okay, the oldest known evidence of Pythagorean theorem dates from old Babylonian clay tablets from about 1900 to 1600 BCE, roughly 1,000 years before Pythagoras. [57:00] Isn't that wild? [57:05] Clay tablets often cited use what we now call the Pythagorean theorem to complete – to compute rather the diagonal of rectangles and squares including an excellent approximation. [57:19] Look at this. This is nuts, man. [57:22] Vedic ritual text explicitly states the rule equivalent – I don't know how to say that. What is that? A squared, B squared, C squared. C squared. But the diagonal of a rectangle that includes numerical examples predating or roughly contemporary with classical Greek mathematics. So completely different parts of the world. Yeah. Yeah. [57:40] And they're coming up with the same stuff. Exactly. [57:43] Because they're all curious. That's it. [57:45] Yeah, they're all curious and eventually all curiosity leads to truth or some form of it. I would argue that anything that's of impact on the world has only been done by curious people. In hindsight, we label those people as successful or smart or –

[58:09] and [58:10] people that aren't curious are not fun. Yeah, they are interesting. So because of that, they don't attract... [58:42] So that's the one quality everybody wants in personal relationships is like taking interest in them and like, [58:48] actually understanding them better, [58:49] or being curious about common things. [58:52] and um [58:53] So it's not just being curious leads to success. It's more that people around you want you to be successful. [58:59] if you're curious because [59:01] you will have more compounding and fulfilling relationships. [59:05] I would agree with that. [59:06] Yeah. [59:07] I'd say it's one of the more important qualities of human beings. [59:11] I mean, it's led to everything that we have today. All curiosity has led to all of our architecture, math, everything, art, everything. The transistor. Like, you know the story of the transistor? Yeah. Yeah. [59:22] So Bell Labs was basically employing as many, like, like, [59:25] History adjusted as many telephone engineers back then as the number of software engineers today.
[59:31] But only three people cared enough to question whether you should use these really hot giant vacuum tubes for amplifying telephone signals. [59:40] So vacuum tubes are very big, power hungry, and [59:43] very hot, and so [59:45] They were not fault tolerant and it's very expensive. [59:48] And so three people questioned the need for that and came up with the idea of the transistor. [59:52] to amplify current [59:55] and that [59:56] That was the Nobel Prize winning discovery and [59:58] Not just that it was useful to amplify telephone signals, [1:00:01] It basically led to the rise of modern computing and [1:00:04] we wouldn't have an iPhone like this today if not for those three people. There's this one scientist that said they weren't even remotely exceptional guys and that they gave them the credit for this so that they didn't have to reveal the true nature of where this technology came from. I see. Interesting. Yeah. [1:00:39] again. [1:00:40] Tinfoil hat. [1:00:41] securely on our heads. This is not something I believe. This is just something that's fun. There's a few inventions that came out of that time period, roughly after 1947, that are weird. And one of them is fiber optics and one of them is a transistor. And these are supposedly attributed to back engineering programs. So the Roswell crash, I don't know if you ever paid any attention to it. It's a real weird one because the cover of the Roswell Daily Record
[1:01:11] that the government has a crashed disk that landed in the desert, a bunch of witnesses, a bunch of people saw it. [1:01:18] It's also people that supposedly saw physical bodies of these creatures and supposedly – [1:01:27] Again. [1:01:28] Who knows what's true? But Truman went to the site. He visited it. And then the planes, two separate planes, were flown to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which was – I think it was just Wright Base back then. I don't think it was Wright-Patterson. But they flew them out. [1:01:45] And the idea was this... [1:01:48] Material was so important they didn't want to risk one plane crashing, so they flew it in two different planes. And that this stuff has always been known to be stored at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. That's what everybody always talks about. And then a lot of it was moved to Bell Labs. Oh, wow. There was a company called the American Computer Company. [1:02:18] that and the other thing and you could just put in whatever your specs were and they would build it for you but they all had a whole section of their website dedicated to bell labs and back engineered ufo technology and all they talked about and this one like whoever ran it was like a fucking kook i don't know is that still around that website yeah american computer company is still around [1:02:39] Interesting. So this is like the 1990s.
[1:02:46] the transistor was not invented. It was known and it was given to the public. There's apparently a giant leap between the first ideas of the transistor and then what it... [1:02:56] actually came about and how much money had to be spent to create it off of this leap. This was this – [1:03:03] This assertion by these scientists that we're trying to examine this. The thing about Bell Labs is there's a military base right outside of Bell Labs. And they say, well, that military base is to guard New York City. But New York City is quite a flight away. But Bell Labs is right there. Yeah. And they were working on some – [1:03:22] Deep, dark shit at Bell Labs for sure because I've had a bunch of people on that were talking about remote viewing exercises that they were doing out of Bell Labs. We've had a bunch of people that came on and talked about various programs that were going on that were like top secret programs that were happening that were being run through Bell Labs. There's some weirdness to that place, like real weirdness. Yeah, absolutely. [1:03:45] And it's fun. Yeah. The idea that, like... [1:03:48] Thank you. [1:03:48] You know that... It definitely feels very disconnected. Like, okay, like you were using all these vacuum tubes... [1:03:56] Um... [1:03:57] And then suddenly you're like, OK, what if we just use semiconductors? [1:04:01] Okay, there's definitely... [1:04:04] a pretty far drift from what you're doing currently to what you're supposed to do. And, um, um, and also the, the, the idea of the first transistor and what ended up being used in chips, um, [1:04:16] The junction transistor are quite different too.
[1:04:19] So there are like big leaps in terms of what the core idea was. It's not an incremental change. The way I thought about it was like, okay, that's like, [1:04:27] tens of years of work. [1:04:29] And that's why they made a big change. [1:04:32] And so if you actually looked into the individual milestones they had, maybe it would have looked pretty different. But your conspiracy theory is pretty interesting. It's always fun. Yeah. And also, there's just too many stories of this. And David Grush is… [1:04:48] on oath said that there are back engineering programs and he was read into these and that they've been around for a long time. But this is the assertion of that movie, The Age of Disclosure, that the real problem is that they have misappropriated funds and lied to Congress. And so they come out and tell you, okay, we do have this program. Well, guess what? Everybody goes to jail because you guys are a bunch of liars and you've been stealing money and you've been doing it, whatever you want to do with this money. I don't know how much money. [1:05:15] How much oversight is there on back engineering UFO programs? So probably a lot of people get in trouble. A lot of people go to jail. [1:05:24] These things are all being done by weapons manufacturers, right? Like where are you going to bring them to? Well, you're going to bring them to Lockheed Martin or you're going to bring them to, you know, Rocketdyne. It's going to be someone that does that kind of work. You're not going to do it on your – it's not going to be like, we'll do it. No, you're going to have to bring it to people that already make spaceships or bring it to people that already make jets. Yeah. And so they have a massive competitive advantage over any other company that's doing it. So then there's other companies that also had contracts with the United States government.
[1:05:54] So he lays out all the problems with disclosure, and their assertion is that [1:06:01] The only thing – what we need if we really want to find out the truth is we're going to need widespread amnesty for all these people that were involved. Mm-hmm. [1:06:10] My problem with that is that's what I would say, too, if I had been stealing money for decades and decades. I'd be like, all right, we need amnesty. And then I'll tell you where all this stuff is. I'm like, how do we know what – [1:06:23] This stuff is whether or not these are just top secret military programs with advanced propulsion technology that's unavailable to the public. And they're going to say that it's aliens and they back engineered this and they did that. [1:06:35] They clearly don't want to tell people. They don't want people to know. I think a large part of it is probably because they could get in trouble. But I think also a large part of it is because it's fun to keep secrets from people. [1:06:47] Especially when you're the government. Why tell them? Fuck those people. Yeah. Fuck them. They don't even know UFOs are real. Meanwhile, you know, we're going into a bunker in the middle of the mountain and we're remote viewing. You know, it's it's probably there's probably a lot of fun involved in having access to information that most people would kill for. [1:07:06] Yeah. [1:07:07] I mean, there's so much information that... [1:07:10] We just don't have access to it. [1:07:12] Which brings me to this question. [1:07:14] With... [1:07:15] It seems like one of the things that's happening both with AI and with technology in general is that – [1:07:22] you have more and more access to information and more and more answers to questions than ever before. Yeah. Yeah.
[1:07:30] At a certain point in time... [1:07:32] There's going to be no bottleneck. Yeah. And we're going to know everything about everything. Yeah. So how is anyone in government? [1:07:39] going to keep a secret? How is any corruption ever going to be possible? At a certain point in time, all of it will get uncovered. Like it's much more difficult to commit murder now with DNA evidence, right? Back in the 1800s, like I didn't see nothing. I wasn't there. And then you're free. Like now they do your fingerprints. Now they get your DNA. Now there's flock cameras. There's like more and more and more. It's harder to get away with things. [1:08:06] So it seems like to me, like whatever they have, whatever anybody has, ultimately there's going to come a point in time where there's so much data and so much information and you could run all your questions. Like there's an AI fact checker for politicians now. Yeah. So while a politician is giving a speech, you can run an AI fact checker and in real time – [1:08:26] it will tell you whether or not these people are full of shit. [1:08:28] It seems like the direction is there's not going to be anybody full of shit in the future because it's not going to be possible. [1:08:33] Yeah. [1:08:34] I mean, the government still would have access to things that... [1:08:37] we human beings wouldn't have access to. [1:08:39] Like regular people. [1:08:41] Um, [1:08:42] And particularly defense related, [1:08:45] weapons related [1:08:47] Like, for example... [1:08:49] when they did the, uh, when is, when is the villain thing? Mm hmm. Um, [1:08:53] I don't think people in Venezuela even understood like [1:08:55] what even those weapons were [1:08:58] I don't think we did. We were the general public. Yeah. They were described as something – the literal words used were like alien-like technology.
[1:09:06] So even we didn't know that-- [1:09:09] The United States had access to that quality of defense technology until that incident happened. [1:09:16] So, [1:09:17] There are obviously going to be secrets, right? [1:09:20] especially the highest stakes things. [1:09:23] I would say like... [1:09:24] Building frontier AI models is similar to that. [1:09:27] Of course, as [1:09:28] More and more models are getting open source. [1:09:31] I think the knowledge is diffusing. [1:09:33] but still [1:09:34] the true... [1:09:36] amount of details you need to actually train a really amazing frontier reasoning capability model. [1:09:42] is still not like widely diffused. [1:09:44] So... [1:09:45] My things... [1:09:48] hypothesis that whatever is extremely high stakes [1:09:53] will still not be widely diffused. [1:09:55] At least there will be enough... [1:09:58] Structure is in place to keep it secret. [1:10:00] Forever? [1:10:01] Not forever, but for a while. [1:10:03] - For a while. - Yeah. - That's the thing. - Long term, sure. [1:10:06] things to get out and people don't feel like long term is what I'm looking at like [1:10:11] Look. [1:10:11] When we're looking at history, we're talking in these – like when we're looking at all these different temples and all these different things, we're talking about thousands and thousands of years. And thousands of years time span in between each individual one. [1:10:24] With our world, we're talking about... [1:10:26] massive change in 200 years. This country is 250 years old. Think about how kooky that is. That is a blink of an eye in history. Do we understand everything that happened in the United States?
[1:10:38] No. Exactly. So there are still some details that are hidden from us. We don't fully understand. [1:10:43] Everything right for now. Yeah [1:10:45] But my question is, as time goes on, [1:10:49] 250 years from now, is it even possible to keep any secrets from anybody? [1:10:56] And is that a good thing? It might be a good thing. [1:10:59] It sounds horrible to people because they're like, oh, my God, what about privacy? [1:11:03] Right. But also what about lies? [1:11:05] No more lies. Everyone's going to know what you're thinking. Everyone's going to know everything people do all the time. [1:11:12] Yeah. [1:11:13] I mean, if you're a true surveillance state, obviously there are no secrets. Right. Right. [1:11:17] Um, [1:11:18] Except about the government itself. That's the problem. [1:11:22] Does it bottleneck with the government or does it get to a point where you can't even have government secrets? Because as technology evolves and as human civilization evolves, secrets will be less and less – not just necessary, but secrets will be problematic because there will be an impediment to knowledge. There will be an impediment to understanding the true scope of what the world is, like the true nature of all of our various moving parts. [1:11:52] of curiosity and truth-seekingness, which is universal. It's existed ever since [1:11:57] we known human beings [1:11:59] If that continues and that continues to be the case, then... [1:12:02] people will have enough [1:12:04] incentives to figure out the truth. [1:12:06] Yeah. [1:12:07] And if something is actually hard to get to,
[1:12:10] It only motivates you more to actually go and find it. For sure. So my question is, where does this all go? You know, and you obviously work in AI. And when you think about AI and when you think about just technology in general and you extrapolate, you just take it from here and you just… [1:12:27] plot it out. Like what is a possible scenario of 250 years from now? Like what does it even look like? [1:12:34] What does the United States look like at 500 years old? It's very hard to know. [1:14:25] in AI, I don't even consider myself like that, but whoever is at most [1:14:29] frontier level of decision-making in AI five years ago, I don't think they predicted the exact state we are in today. [1:14:36] Nobody did. [1:14:37] If they did, they would have already procured all the compute and manufactured all the chips, bought out all the fabs. They would have done all that, right? Just this is counterfactual. [1:14:47] Everyone is bottlenecked by not having enough compute, and we don't have enough chips, we don't have enough power. These are all the problems that if you invite anybody in AI and ask, what is a bottleneck in AI today, and everybody would say power. [1:14:59] I think Jensen was here and he said the same thing, right? Yeah. [1:15:02] But... [1:15:04] Okay, like, if you predicted this exact state five years before... [1:15:09] Wouldn't you have secured enough power and started building more power plants yourself and started getting permits and started like... [1:15:14] planning out capacity, no, nobody did that.
[1:15:16] Everything is reactive to the demand that we're having today. And that's just five years. Yeah, that's just five years. So when you ask me to predict 250 years, I just have to honestly say I don't know. Do you ever sit back and think about it, though? I don't think about it. What it could be? I don't think about it. So there are a lot of fun. I use perplexity a lot for... [1:15:36] these kind of things, especially this new feature computer inside it. [1:15:41] One, this is just for hypothetical scenarios. Let's say there is an AGI, right? [1:15:47] I've seen you ask a lot of people about this in [1:15:50] And a lot of... [1:15:52] Conventional answers is like, [1:15:54] Oh, like we'll just become managers of the AIs. Don't worry. [1:15:57] but um [1:15:59] If the price of cognition is the price of compute, managing an AI is also... [1:16:04] pretty much doable by the AI itself. [1:16:07] Because the bottleneck is not like unique... [1:16:11] Cognition capability there. So... [1:16:14] the value of the society will automatically shift toward it scarce. [1:16:18] And fundamentally, what has been scarce is like, [1:16:21] asking, like, high-quality questions about things. Okay, like, what if, like, we just... [1:16:26] completely spend all our time understanding the past. [1:16:30] That's an interesting endeavor. It was not cool before, but it'll [1:16:33] it'll become cool again. And like we usually use the view like archaeology or history [1:16:40] is not something that's worth having a career in because it doesn't pay well, but [1:16:43] What if it actually starts paying you a lot more? Now that actual knowledge works being done by AIs, and it's all mundane, and the price of that is basically a zero.
[1:16:52] Right, and archaeology would be one of the few things that it wouldn't have access to because it doesn't have the actual ground. It can't get into the ground and do the scans. [1:17:05] But you're still going to be the one probing. Right. Because you have incomplete information all the time. [1:17:11] Even the idea of, OK, let's go explore this particular area, [1:17:15] Let's go understand better. Let's go try to reverse engineer. Let's go try to build this again. How would it be if we wanted to do the same thing on the moon? There are so many interesting projects to work on for us. As long as we stay curious and we stay interested in a lot of things that we've done before and [1:17:31] trying to understand civilization. [1:17:34] that I'm not really concerned about, like, what things we get to do. We might be doing a lot more cool things for what it's worth. Like, I don't know if anybody will be, like, coming and telling you that, oh, it's so cool to, like, open an Excel sheet every day and make financial models, right? Compared to, like... There's got to be somebody out there that likes that. I mean, there's something about, like, the task you do and what... [1:17:55] You get paid for, like, what is the job title, blah, blah, blah. And some people... [1:17:58] associate their [1:18:00] personal worth with like [1:18:02] where they work at and how much they get paid. [1:18:05] And I think that thing is going to collapse in a world where, like, [1:18:10] the price of all that cognition is going to be the price of compute. [1:18:13] What do you think happens to people... [1:18:16] If. [1:18:18] a large percentage of jobs, [1:18:20] get replaced by AI.
[1:18:22] I think they'll find new things. [1:18:24] We've always gravitated towards... [1:18:27] things that are scarce. [1:18:28] Because that's where the value lies. [1:18:31] And so if [1:18:33] you know, [1:18:35] Have you... One interesting analogy... [1:18:37] is... [1:18:39] um [1:18:40] Have you the Gulf states? [1:18:43] where there's an abundance of resources and export [1:18:46] their resources to other states, and that pays for the whole state. [1:18:49] You know how they offer everybody free electricity, subsidized health, subsidized education, and no taxes? [1:18:58] When I first went to Dubai almost like 20 years ago, [1:19:02] Um... [1:19:04] They told me people don't pay taxes here. [1:19:07] And nobody pays for electricity here. [1:19:09] and education is like super cheap. [1:19:12] And I was like, wait, how is that real? [1:19:14] and and [1:19:17] And the way that's real is that, I mean, of course, Texas also has no taxes, and any well-run state can do this. [1:19:26] Because the government provides you all these things... [1:19:28] it becomes a raunty estate. [1:19:30] like [1:19:31] you offer political acquiescence to the state. [1:19:34] and uh... [1:19:35] What ended up happening is... [1:19:37] citizens there [1:19:38] Expect the state to find them jobs. [1:19:40] expect to take care of job displacement for them. [1:19:43] So they don't worry. So it made them a little more lazy. So that's not a good future to have. [1:19:48] there [1:19:49] Some people talk about AI subsidies and AI dividends that get paid to everybody. I think we need to do some form of that, but...
[1:19:56] That in entirety won't solve the problem. [1:19:59] Right. Well, the thing about... [1:20:01] P... [1:20:02] But human nature is sort of undeniable. And if you give people the ability to be lazy, a large percentage of people will take that. That's right. A large percentage won't, though. Yeah. There's going to be enough people that are inspired to do something and they say, okay, well, now my basic needs are taken care of. Let me pursue my actual interests. That's right. And find purpose in that. Yeah. Because that's – a lot of people find purpose in whatever their occupation is. [1:20:32] something, whatever it is, then you'll still have meaning in your life. And we've just become a... It keeps coming back to staying curious. Yes. And finding value in your relationships, your family. [1:20:46] caring for each other, [1:20:48] If you ask a lot of retired people, actually retired people is a good demographic to understand. [1:20:53] what would happen, what are things people find meaning in after work's taken off them. [1:20:58] And the majority of the answers are always like family. [1:21:01] caring [1:21:03] you know, personal relationships. [1:21:05] and community. [1:21:07] Like these are the things retired people keep doing to like, you know, keep themselves active and wake up every day and have something to look for. [1:21:14] So all those things will become even more important [1:21:17] at a time when like [1:21:18] work itself doesn't [1:21:20] mean much. [1:21:22] Doesn't mean humans won't be status-seeking. I think we'll still be. [1:21:26] But status is not going to come from...
[1:21:29] whether you're working at, you know, like [1:21:30] a particular famous bank or a tech company or whatever. [1:21:34] It'll be driven by like [1:21:36] how interesting you are. [1:21:38] Are you interested to talk to? [1:21:40] When I can talk to an AI, like, despite that, are you still interesting to talk to? Are there certain things I get out of talking to you that completely change my perspective about a bunch of things? [1:21:50] Or is it just fun to hang around you? [1:21:53] Can we have a compounding relationship together? [1:21:56] And I think, again, it goes back to Lake. [1:21:59] being curious about things. Well, this is best case scenario, right? [1:22:03] Worst case scenario is civilization upheaval, chaos, civil war. And it's possible even without an AI. Right. Yeah. Look, we've gotten real close to it a couple of times. Exactly. Yeah. So – and we did not need an AGI-like scenario for – [1:22:19] a civilization collapse in the past as you clearly seen right [1:22:23] a calamity can just [1:22:25] Take out all of us. Wipe out everything. Sure. Especially natural ones. Yeah. That's why I'm not a big fan of everybody claiming that the AI is going to... [1:22:33] you know, kill us. So, like, AGI is going to destroy humanity, and, like, it's too dangerous, and we all need to stop doing these things. But at the same time, continuing to fill all the status centers and continuing to make money. You have to have one consistent position. My position is that... [1:22:49] Whether AI or not, [1:22:51] I think being curious is going to serve you really well. [1:22:54] Um... [1:22:55] I think it's going to help you have a better life. And there are two paths to curiosity, one that can kill it and one that can supercharge it.
[1:23:02] In my opinion, the one that kills curiosity is algorithmic feeds. [1:23:07] Like the brain rot that you're fed every day, which is, you know, this continuous doom scrolling. [1:23:13] That's bad. [1:23:15] And the one that can supercharge it is AI. [1:23:18] Okay, like... [1:23:19] Now that you could just ask... [1:23:21] Whatever you want. If everybody has like a pull it up Jamie for them. [1:23:25] And that's amazing. So all you have to do is [1:23:30] Ew. [1:23:30] Be curious about a lot of different things. [1:23:32] And of course, talk to interesting people, engage in interesting activities together, [1:23:37] If money is no longer an issue, you can fund passion projects yourself. You don't have to require government funding or venture funding. What if you just wanted to build a mini... [1:23:48] cave yourself. Okay, like you find a piece of land somewhere. There's a lot of land in America. [1:23:53] way more than we know what to do with it. [1:23:56] And surely we can build a lot of interesting things there. [1:24:00] Well, that's a good glass half full idea. [1:24:04] One of the things that I keep coming to is this whole idea of people working and making money and having careers and having portfolios and bank accounts and all that. [1:24:17] This is all very recent in human history. Yeah, very recent. Very recent. It's very recent. But we've become accustomed to this as a way of life. And Microsoft built this concept of a knowledge worker because they wanted to sell more office software. [1:24:31] Really? [1:24:32] Yeah, like this whole idea of putting a
[1:24:35] PC on every desk [1:24:36] And making you glue to the PC was there. That was Bill Gates' vision. Put a PC on every desk. That fucking wizard. [1:24:43] What an incredible accomplishment because, boy, did they nail it. [1:24:47] Yes, it was not about making computing beautiful or anything in the way like Steve Jobs envisioned it. Right. [1:24:54] It was just about like sell more computers because that way you can sell more software. And if you sell more software, you become rich. [1:25:02] And the company just was a machine that was just built, essentially a large sales machine that was built to sell software. [1:25:12] And [1:25:13] and now they sell cloud, but whatever. That's essentially the reason that, you know, [1:25:20] We all got trained to use [1:25:22] software [1:25:23] people went and did tutorials on how to use Excel, how to use Word, [1:25:28] how to use all these email tools. And then now that became the upskilling you needed to go work at different companies and then write code and whatever. So if that part is going to be done by an AI, it's not necessarily a bad thing. [1:25:41] Because this is not actually the way you feel like real purpose and fulfillment in your own life. [1:25:47] If you were never exposed to that, [1:25:49] whatever you had as the intrinsic curiosity in you, [1:25:54] That's probably what you should be doing. [1:25:55] Yeah, there could be a completely new way to live life where we're not – [1:26:00] dependent upon labor for basic needs. [1:26:03] But then it's going to be
[1:26:06] incumbent upon people, they're going to have to figure out a way to be either self-starting or we're going to have to expose people to things that are going to excite their curiosity and make that a mandate. [1:26:17] It has to start from schools. Yeah. [1:26:20] As long as we keep rewarding people for having answers, [1:26:24] instead of [1:26:26] asking interesting questions. [1:26:27] It's going to be a difficult change. Like in schools, you're always rewarded for being smart based on whether you have answers to like 20 different questions. [1:26:37] Who cares? All the stony questions can be answered by AIs. [1:26:40] Have you ever like flipped a script where you say, okay, like I'm going to, [1:26:44] The smartest person in the room is the one who has the most interesting questions. [1:26:47] Mmm. [1:26:48] Okay, what kind of students can you cultivate based on that? [1:26:53] Like, imagine if the room had no pressure to always know the answer. [1:26:57] but the freedom to ask a lot of questions. Right, because sometimes when someone asks a question, it'll... [1:27:04] Thank you. [1:27:05] make you pause and go, I never even thought of that. But that's it. [1:27:09] That's the question. Yeah. And it takes a... [1:27:12] I mean, so many people have so many different perspectives, which is one of the more interesting things that I've experienced doing this podcast is I get to talk to so many different people, and they vary so widely. There's so many different ways of looking at the world and so many different ways of engaging with the world and so many different things that people are fascinated with that they spent their entire life studying and pursuing. It's like you get this rich tapestry of the human experience that's just...
[1:27:41] I would have never been exposed to this many people. Yeah. And in turn, I've been able to expose these people to all these other folks that are just listening and watching right now. And it's fucking incredible. And it's such a – for me, it's like the perfect job. I've never had a job that more aligns with my own personality as much as this. [1:28:00] Because I've always been that kid, like, shut the fuck up with all the questions. I've always been that kid. That's the system, right? It's not your fault. Right. Like, it's actually, the reason you're successful now is the exact thing that people told you to shut up about in the past. [1:28:15] Right. Yeah. [1:28:16] Hey, stop bothering my lecturer. [1:28:21] asking all these unrelated questions. [1:28:23] It's mainly a frustration of the teacher that they don't have the answers to you. [1:28:27] Right. Sure. And – [1:28:30] And now that that bottleneck is gone, [1:28:32] We did this experiment with one instructor at MIT who taught the introduction to biology class, where he came and told us that he's going to give perplexity to all the kids, all the students, and they would use it as part of the... [1:28:46] lectures. [1:28:48] So instead of fighting AI, [1:28:50] You just give AI to everybody. [1:28:52] and let them ask whatever questions they want, and they can actually use it in the exams too. [1:28:56] So how do you even design [1:28:59] Questions for an exam? [1:29:01] in such a world [1:29:03] is maybe you just encourage people to [1:29:06] pose a question that AI can't answer right now, [1:29:09] And that becomes your...
[1:29:11] research project. [1:29:13] and you turn everybody into a scientist. Fundamentally, there's this belief that scientists have to go through a rigorous PhD, and you have to get accredited by an amazing university to be that. [1:29:24] Sure, but... [1:29:25] anyone who's curious can be a scientist. [1:29:28] The only thing that's required to be a good scientist is intellectual humility. [1:29:32] to understand that you could be wrong about things. [1:29:35] Things that everyone takes for granted, you could still question them. [1:29:39] And when you're presented with new evidence and new data, you're willing to change your mind. [1:29:44] and you're willing to operate with ambiguity and uncertainty about the world, [1:29:48] That's basically all the qualities you need to be a scientist. [1:29:52] And you can run your experiments, you can gather data, you can gather evidence, and you can consult people, you can bring in experts and talk to them. [1:30:00] And as long as you're uncovering more and more about the world, [1:30:03] You are a scientist. [1:30:04] You don't need a PhD to feel that you're allowed to be a scientist or not. And I think that's the most important quality we need to... [1:30:14] inculcated in our kids. [1:30:16] the upcoming generation, so that they all feel more liberated. Okay, like, finally, I don't have to memorize this textbook or these lecture materials. And like, I don't have to feel bad if I get like 12 out of 20. Okay, who cares? Like, yeah, it's always going to get 20 out of 20. That's not what you're meant to be like good at. Of course, master the foundations, the basics. Great. But [1:30:38] Your job is to actually pose interesting questions. [1:30:41] Yeah, and the Intel actually...
[1:30:42] excuse me, intellectual humility is so important. Because one of the things that was really weird about the whole COVID pandemic was that we weren't supposed to question science. [1:30:52] Yeah. Or when Fauci said, if you question Anthony Fauci, you are questioning science. That's because they try to assign credibility through their degrees. Yes. Through their affiliations. Yes. Appeal to authority. But not through the scientific method. Right. [1:31:08] Anybody should be allowed to ask questions as long as they are... [1:31:11] open to new evidence. Yeah. And that's the most important quality of a scientist. [1:31:16] Well, the scientific method alone, I mean, it's one of the most important things that we can use to try to figure out what's real and what's not real. And as soon as someone says, don't use it, don't question, well, wait a minute. And then – [1:31:30] There was an actual government push to silence questioning, and legitimate researchers were kicked off of Twitter because they didn't back the narrative. Yeah. Like, this is all anti-science. This is not... [1:31:43] This is not you're questioning science. Science demands questioning. Yeah. It's what it is. Yeah. [1:31:50] When you don't understand something, the best thing you can do is ask all possible questions. [1:31:54] And so curbing that [1:31:57] is almost like a way of saying, [1:31:59] Look, I'm going to tell you what happened, and you need to believe in my worldview. [1:32:03] And I'm not open to [1:32:05] I wonder if anybody has used AI to try to map out possible scenarios for where technology leads human civilization and what could be done to mitigate the problems and push it in the proper direction, like have a bunch of different models of how this could play out. Yeah.
[1:32:27] I mean, uh, [1:32:28] I try to do that for fun, but I haven't done it in a serious enough way to have a proper answer to that. Right. But... [1:32:35] I think like, you know... [1:32:37] a lot of things that we... [1:32:39] are doing today will not be considered needed or valuable. [1:32:43] I [1:32:44] And maybe a little bit of taking our own lessons from the past. I don't know if you, when you grew up as a student, did you have to like be good at mental math, like multiplying? [1:32:54] arbitrary numbers [1:32:55] Was that considered a sign of smartness or remembering people's phone numbers or something? Well, you had to because there was – I mean you had little address books. That's what we used to carry around like a little – I had a little address book that I keep on my desk. Yeah. It's a little tiny thing with everybody's number and name. That's the only way I knew people's numbers. I see. And I remembered a bunch of them, like all my friends. Yeah. I had all my friends. I don't have any of my friends' numbers remembered. Yeah. Maybe my wife and my friend Eddie. [1:33:19] I have two numbers in my head. [1:33:21] But was there a time when people thought somebody was smart based on how good their memory power was? Oh, yeah, definitely. But would you say that now? I'm like... [1:34:47] This is what I do. Like, that's my thing. Yeah. You know, I pay attention to stuff. Yeah. But, yeah, I mean – [1:34:53] Memory itself is always very impressive. When someone has an excellent memory and can pull out facts of the past, we automatically equate that to intelligence. Yeah. I think it's impressive, but it's not necessarily a sign of being intelligent, right? [1:35:08] I think you have a very fast lookup table in your head. That's great. [1:35:13] It's very valuable. [1:35:14] um [1:35:16] But I still think being smart is all about posting the most interesting... [1:35:19] Questions. Also, the decisions that you make and whether or not you self-correct when you make mistakes. Yeah, absolutely. [1:35:26] Yeah, all those things. Exactly. So when you have an amplifier to intelligence, like an AI...
[1:35:32] all the time, where lookups is essentially something you can delegate. [1:35:36] So reasoning for decision-making is something you can delegate. [1:35:40] But... [1:35:40] posing the right questions to gather the right data, and then forming your own judgment based on what it reasons and comes up with, [1:35:47] And finally, having the courage to make the decision, that's still you, that agency that... [1:35:52] Intrinsic curiosity to ask the right question, the scientific... [1:35:55] intellectual humility to like [1:35:57] you know gather new evidence [1:35:59] always questioning your beliefs, that is still you. And so I feel like that is essentially what would be considered smart in the ages to come. [1:36:08] If somebody's like a [1:36:10] like a proxy scientist or whatever. No more... [1:36:14] It doesn't have to go to MIT or Harvard and get a PhD to be a scientist or to be considered a scientist. [1:36:19] Because all scientific literature is open and accessible to everybody, and [1:36:23] You can even take a paper written by an expert [1:36:27] and use an AI, understand it deeply, ask a lot of questions, and maybe even disprove what they... [1:36:32] Claim. [1:36:33] to be true. [1:36:34] That's the whole peer review process, right? [1:36:37] The peer review process is all about... [1:36:39] questioning somebody's paper. [1:36:42] And... [1:36:43] That's why whatever you said happened in COVID days is wrong. You should be allowed to... [1:36:49] ask questions about... [1:36:52] Even eminent scientists' work [1:36:54] It's okay. Like if you're dumb and you had the wrong questions, sure. You're going to learn from that. [1:36:59] It's worse than not being allowed to ask the question. Yeah, agreed. It's going to be interesting to see what the future of education looks like.
[1:37:06] Like how valuable are degrees? [1:37:09] When essentially AI is going to be able to do the majority of whatever work you need done on. [1:37:14] variety like how how good are they right now at just [1:37:23] Like you could ask questions. Pretty good. Pretty amazing, right? Yeah, pretty good. How good are they at mathematics? Perfect. Like how good are they at coding? Way better than people. Yeah. And at a certain point in time, it's going to be interesting to like what is education now? Is education just providing you with information? Because that information is readily available. Yeah. Or is education teaching you how to think? Yeah. Teaching you how to pursue your interests and be curious and have intellectual humility and understand what you know and what you don't know. [1:37:51] I think that's where it should be. [1:37:52] I still think... [1:37:54] Institutions will preserve their brand value. [1:37:57] Because... [1:37:57] There is a certain... [1:37:59] aspect of education that's outside of learning, which is just having access to other [1:38:04] curious and intelligent people. Sure. And community. Yeah. And brands attract good communities, peer groups, blah, blah, blah. But the actual process of learning sort of has to change. [1:38:14] and what you're rewarded for has to change. So fundamentally everything... [1:38:18] flows downstream of the incentive. [1:38:21] Right. So if the incentive is to score the highest on the exam based on answers, [1:38:26] you're not really changing much. [1:38:27] You need to change that process. [1:38:30] You need to see in the process of what do you reward a student? Like, what is A plus or A? Right. Right. [1:38:35] That's where we need to start at. We talked about this the other day that the education system in this country was designed to make workers. That's what they did when they first started doing it. Curriculum was designed around that. In India, it's still the case, by the way. Even if you go into a computer science degree...
[1:38:56] I don't know if it's still because I shouldn't misspeak, but at least when I was there and for many years after, the first two years, you just spend learning hardcore electrical and mechanical engineering. [1:39:05] You would learn like welding using lathe machines. You would have to like go and like do workshops, carpentry. [1:39:13] A lot of these things. It was fun. I would think there's a lot of value in that. So in hindsight, I actually think it was fun to learn soldering and like... [1:39:21] how to make circuits on red boards and turn to circuit boards. But... [1:39:26] So if somebody was just interested in some, you know, just writing code, let's say back then, all this is kind of like pointless to learn, but you have to go through it. [1:39:37] to be qualified as an engineer. [1:39:38] Hmm. [1:39:39] so um [1:39:41] And the reason the curriculum was designed that way is because that's what... [1:39:44] the labor force [1:39:46] was required back then to build like oil factories and like all these things. So you had to learn mechanical engineering, you had to learn fluid mechanics, whatever. But, um, I think that that should also change because if, if, if the way like you do work changes, um, [1:39:59] then what you're trained for in college should also change. And it's much harder to change these things. You know, people are much slower. They're scared to do changes. Disruption is always, like, looked down upon. And... [1:40:12] So I think let's at least start at the incentive structure. [1:40:15] right from the schools, right from the colleges. Let's not reward people based on how much they know. Well, it seems like in the future, when things do radically change, and it seems like they're inevitable, they're going to radically change.
[1:40:29] you [1:40:30] universities and schools are going to be rewarded for having developed thinkers that are able to adapt to this new world. That's right. [1:40:39] Yeah, so they're going to have to figure out how to adjust their curriculum. Yeah. [1:40:43] Because the tools are so spectacular now that just this idea of just memorizing information, it's not – [1:40:51] That's not what you're going to need to get by in the future. It's not. [1:40:55] And I guess one proxy different schools use is maybe... [1:40:59] If more entrepreneurs arise out of your school, [1:41:02] you probably created a lot of independent thinkers. [1:41:06] because they are willing to take a fresh perspective towards a problem and build their own thing from scratch. [1:41:13] And fundamentally, that's what America has always been about, is... [1:41:17] you know, the American dream of coming here and like... [1:41:20] having your own idea [1:41:22] and still be taken seriously by a bunch of people. [1:41:24] the whole idea of venture capital and leaks to Sierra like [1:41:28] - Okay. [1:41:28] family and friends around. There's a whole idea of just having your friends help you to bootstrap a business and then turning it into a success. And success doesn't mean like multi-billion or 10 billion or whatever, right? As long as it pays you enough that you don't have to work for somebody else. [1:41:42] and you can live a fulfilling life, and you can just go explore your passions. [1:41:46] That's success. That's actually a better success than... [1:41:50] creating company based on what other people want you to do and then [1:41:54] hating a job for it. Yeah. And having a yacht and being miserable and working every day. That's why I said like not the smartest, the richest people are not always the ones who have the most fulfilling lives. The most curious people have the most fulfilling lives because
[1:42:08] They have better relationships. [1:42:09] They're actually able to sit and look at something and be curious about it instead of being worried about what's going on. What did the American dream – what was it to you when you weren't in America? [1:42:21] Like, what is it like? How is it discussed? [1:42:25] Well, um... [1:42:27] To me, I always thought... [1:42:29] America is the only country where you can come here. [1:42:32] and have an idea and people listen to you. [1:42:35] and encourage you to go pursue it. [1:42:38] The risk-seeking culture is just incredible here. [1:42:42] Everybody, everywhere else you can are like either explicitly or implicitly are forced to defer to authority. [1:42:49] Okay, like go and ask the permission of this person, go and ask the permission of that person, or get their approval, get their insight. Sure, you can consult everybody out there, but if you have a thought that challenges what they believe in... [1:43:02] this country still encourages you to let go. [1:43:05] Pursue it. [1:43:05] Hmm. [1:43:07] So... [1:43:08] Yes, like when I came here, obviously Google was [1:43:11] the number one [1:43:13] company that everybody wanted to work in. [1:43:15] But it's also the same country where it allows you, as a new person, [1:43:20] to start a new idea that challenges one of the biggest companies in this own country. [1:43:26] and actually wants it. People actually want [1:43:29] new ideas. And then... [1:43:32] You can consistently see that there are always going to be more and more new ideas and new companies to be created here.
[1:43:39] And so that spirit of like questioning... [1:43:42] is encouraged a lot here. [1:43:45] And it happens in academic research. I started off as an academic researcher. [1:43:49] even there, um, [1:43:51] A lot of ideas when I had it and I would share it with people. [1:43:57] You know, people actually give you very honest feedback about things. [1:44:01] But they don't stop you from working on anything. [1:44:04] And that's fantastic. [1:44:06] Because that's very fresh. It's very liberating. And that's not... [1:44:11] anywhere else. [1:44:12] I would say it's not in India. It's a simplification to say it's not anywhere else, but... [1:44:17] It's not as encouraged. It's not as encouraged. [1:44:20] The incentive structures are not quite there. [1:44:23] And... [1:44:24] Ability to like... [1:44:26] be taken seriously for some crazy ideas is... [1:44:30] why America is still [1:44:31] at the top. [1:44:32] But it's crazy to me that if the American dream is so compelling and so many people come here for it, why doesn't the rest of the world sort of adopt those values? [1:44:41] It's hard. [1:44:42] You know, like a lot of it is cultural. [1:44:46] Like America was Bond... [1:44:49] was made... [1:44:51] from-- [1:44:53] A piece of land, essentially, right? [1:44:55] uh... [1:44:56] And... [1:44:57] a lot of ideas that we built here, a lot of industries that we built here, [1:45:01] We're all created here from nothing. [1:45:04] And that required you to like [1:45:07] Go take bold risks.
[1:45:09] I think Jeff Bezos said this in some podcast that, [1:45:13] Where else would you like be able to go race? [1:45:16] like a few million dollars for an idea that has like 5 to 10% chance of working. [1:45:21] and then fail at it and still go and raise another few million dollars for your next idea. [1:45:28] Nowhere else. People who get rich here actually want to encourage and be part of somebody else's crazy journey. [1:45:36] Because it's hard to pursue all... [1:45:38] Crazy bets yourself. Mm-hmm. [1:45:41] So it's an ecosystem. [1:45:43] And once something becomes an ecosystem, there's network effects. [1:45:46] So it's very hard to copy that. [1:45:48] elsewhere. [1:45:49] And so your value is measured in your curiosity and you're willing to work. [1:45:55] Your willingness to work on whatever it is that is your pursuit. Yes. And then eventually adjusting and learning. Yes. [1:46:01] Catching fire with one of them. Correct. [1:46:03] And you have to work hard. [1:46:07] I'm a big believer in intense hard work. I think nothing great can be accomplished by being soft. And so... [1:46:15] All this recent push for... [1:46:17] having a lot of work-life balance, this and that. Sure, if you have work-life balance, if that's what you want, then I think... [1:46:23] There are certain jobs that will give you that, but... [1:46:25] when you're trying to do something from scratch. [1:46:27] when you're trying to create something from nothing. [1:46:30] It's not meant to be easy. [1:46:31] right there are some sacrifices that have to be made and you're signing up to be part of that experience that that that [1:46:38] surreal joy you get from
[1:46:40] doing something that felt almost impossible to achieve. [1:46:44] and and uh... [1:46:45] And you're not staying up late or waking up early because you're getting paid more. [1:46:51] Maybe you might not get paid anything. Maybe this whole thing goes to nothing. But [1:46:54] that experience you're getting [1:46:57] of being part of something that feels very hard to achieve. [1:47:00] is what you're signing up for today. [1:47:02] be part of. [1:47:03] Yeah, and if you're not... [1:47:04] Find something else. It's fine. There's nothing wrong with that. Exactly. And the country has enough jobs to provide for... [1:47:11] All kinds of needs, right? And everybody goes through different phases in their life. Sometimes they feel a little lazy or disillusioned. Okay. [1:47:18] And so what I like about this country is that there's a lot of curious people here. There's a lot of, like, so many different people, you know, like, whether they use AIs or not AIs, they're all, like, finding meaning in, like, so many interesting projects. Well, obviously, I don't know any other country, really, because I was born here, but... [1:47:37] The people that... [1:47:38] Do talk to me about what the American dream is like from another country. They're the most passionate and the most supportive. [1:47:47] of this idea, this experiment in self-government, and just the whole idea that the country operates on, that anybody can chase their dream. Yeah. That you can. If you have a dream and you're willing to work hard, you could actually do it in this country. That's right. [1:48:04] Yeah, and that's... [1:48:05] The people that are most passionate about that idea oftentimes are people that come from somewhere else where that wasn't available. And it's not just like –
[1:48:15] you know, people coming from one particular country or another, it's the attitude [1:48:19] It's the way the system works and rewards you to be bold and take bets against established players. It's okay, right? It's okay to be an upstart, a challenger. And people love that underdog, and I think that's fantastic. And that culture is continuing. Yes, there are multi-trillion dollar companies here, and they're all going to become even bigger now. [1:48:40] But people still want... [1:48:42] the young... [1:48:44] hungry person to also be successful. [1:48:47] Yeah. Well, they love disruptors. Yeah. [1:48:49] And people love underdogs in this country. Yeah. It's universal. It's not specific to technology. Right. [1:48:58] Like, I'm sure everybody would love an underdog story that wants to go against, like, Coca-Cola or Pepsi or something, too. Sure. Yeah. Oh, in sports. It's our favorite thing. In sports, yeah. We don't like when the guy who's supposed to win wins. Yeah. We love when the guy who's not supposed to win triumphs. Yeah. Yeah. The underdog story. [1:49:14] Yeah. [1:49:14] That's a very uniquely American story. [1:49:17] To me, that's what this country is. [1:49:20] I mean, sure, there's a lot of obstacles and challenges. Just like every other country, there are things here that are challenging, but... [1:49:27] It's one thing that has consistently stayed... [1:49:31] True. [1:49:31] One of the big fears that people in America have about technology in particular is that without – [1:49:39] Being aware that this was going to take place. Everybody gave up their data. Everybody gave up their data and didn't recognize it was a commodity. That in turn made these corporations immensely wealthy and powerful. And then they have the ability to shape narratives. And that concerns people because using –
[1:50:00] their ideological position, uh, [1:50:04] as leverage to try to push that through technology that has immense control and influence over people and that [1:50:13] We didn't see technology and corporations as having that much control over how society views itself and how we interact with each other. [1:50:23] And there's a real... [1:50:24] real concern that these companies got so big and have like, there's a guy named Robert Epstein who's done a lot of work on, um, [1:50:33] narrate or curated search engine results and how much that can have you read seen any of his stuff i think i've seen this yeah how much that can affect elections how much that can affect people's perceptions on any societal issue that's coming up yeah and it's concerning it really is because they do curate search results it's not simply you know you just run it out there and you get this is the data no you get [1:50:58] If you look for specific political figures, depending upon where they fall in the right or left spectrum and depending upon which way the company forms – the corporation forms – falls rather, you'll get different results, and that sucks. That's – it's very concerning that people don't recognize – they don't – [1:51:19] they don't have the ability to see how that – [1:51:22] is dangerous for all of society to have that kind of power and wield it in that way where you're not being honest about accurate objective information. You're pushing particular ideologies. Yeah.
[1:51:34] So, [1:51:35] I think it's kind of like... [1:51:39] This is almost an effect of the asymmetry that exists between the amount of AI power that centralized systems and centralized companies have. [1:51:47] and the amount of AI power you as a sovereign individual has. [1:51:52] So when you don't have the AIs to just [1:51:55] Go judge for yourself like what you should be reading and fed. [1:51:59] you're obviously under the influence of what... [1:52:03] whatever big tech company is controlling the information for. [1:52:06] But when you have access to all those AIs, you can actually just... [1:52:10] customize what you want to see. [1:52:12] by telling the AI, like, hey, this is what I think... [1:52:15] You should actually question and tell me. [1:52:17] Until now, you never had that power for yourself. You're finally getting it. Right. And eventually, we'll be able to have our own LLMs, like our own models that we would be able to post in our own hardware. [1:52:30] We don't have to rely on one centralized model given to us by any specific... [1:52:36] model company [1:52:38] and uh... [1:52:39] Using that, you can shape it to your beliefs, your custom data, [1:52:45] And, and, um, [1:52:46] So when you're consuming a search result, you can actually ask that AI that you control [1:52:51] And you run, so nobody can shut off access to it. [1:52:54] to tell you like, "Hey, can you actually like [1:52:57] Give me a contrarian perspective on this. [1:53:00] Or like, can you tell me if these search results are actually biased? So I think we need to give individuals more sovereignty.
[1:53:08] with more access to their own AIs that they own and run on a piece of hardware they own themselves. [1:53:14] And this is the whole... This is going to be... [1:53:15] leading to the whole rise of local AIs. So as AI models like today, they're very power inefficient, they're running on large data centers, but [1:53:23] in a year or two from now, whatever capability that exists [1:53:26] in the most power-hungry data centers, it'll be possible to run it in some box that you own. Really? Yeah. [1:53:33] It's already happening. It's already happening that there are interesting hardware projects like the Apple Mac Mini, [1:53:40] NVIDIA DGX [1:53:43] where you can actually host [1:53:45] a reasonable size model [1:53:48] And put it in a box and have it run, and you don't have to pay for all the tokens it produces you. [1:53:55] You just have to plug it into your [1:53:57] Power car and it works. [1:53:59] I know Duncan, my friend Duncan Trussell, he does that. [1:54:02] Yeah. [1:54:02] And today, the capability of that model that can run locally is not quite there. [1:54:07] So you would still prefer to use something that runs in the data center. [1:54:11] But eventually, this is going to be a spectrum. There's going to be some percentage of tasks that you would start delegating to this local system. It will be a hybrid model. And over time, it could end up being the case that you could buy something that feels like a refrigerator for your home. [1:54:25] which is your own AI box. [1:54:28] and host a model that you control. So nobody can arbitrarily shut off access to it. [1:54:33] one day. [1:54:34] And then you can... [1:54:35] You can have that be your weapon against what the big tech wants you to be fed or believe in. So this is the only way we can fight this because they have far more computing power.
[1:54:45] far more data [1:54:47] Far more algorithms than you. [1:54:49] So the only way you can fight that is you have something you own yourself. [1:54:54] And with the rise of open source models, open source LLMs, [1:54:58] You can just, and progress in local hardware. [1:55:02] And both Apple and NVIDIA and Intel, they're all doing amazing work here. [1:55:06] you could potentially change the future and give people more power. And this may not be as expensive as people think. [1:55:11] Well, that's a good solution. [1:55:13] Because I've always wondered, like, are these searches, like using Google, is that going to be irrelevant one day? [1:55:21] Because... [1:55:22] You already can just ask your phone. Like, are you... [1:55:24] Most of the time, if I want to have an answer for something, I just ask perplexity. I was like, what is it? Instead of having to sift through all these Google searches and try to figure out what it's showing me first and get to page three where it's what I really want to know, I can get the accurate information and then follow up questions. They're like instantaneous. [1:55:43] And even the models that are running the Perplexity app today, [1:55:47] They're all in the cloud. [1:55:48] Eventually you'll be able to do that [1:55:50] On a box that you own. [1:55:52] You can still use the front end [1:55:55] the UI of the app [1:55:57] but you can control the compute that runs [1:56:00] on Peace of Harbor. You may ask why, why do I care? [1:56:04] Okay, like what if someday like the data center gets taken off? [1:56:08] Like Iran was bombing data centers. Right. Like what if someday like the government decides that model is no longer available?

But the anxiety levels of kids is much higher than ever before. Yeah. Suicidal ideation is higher. Self-harm. Yeah. [1:57:20] My belief is that... [1:57:23] When you're just fed of feed, [1:57:26] and the algorithm of the social media company decides what you're going to see next, [1:57:31] It curbs your curiosity. [1:57:34] And I don't think... [1:57:36] things that curb human curiosity should be encouraged. [1:57:40] Yeah, I agree. And so if the app is designing a way where [1:57:44] It asks you what you're interested in.
[1:57:46] and helps you to come up [1:57:49] and find things that are very related to what you're interested in. Right. That's awesome. [1:57:54] That's not how it works. It's literally like it starts with something. You start doing scrolling and then start showing you what you just scrolled. And then you end up in an echo chamber. And that's not necessarily good. Well, you can get trapped. Yeah. I'm in a trap of schizophrenics lately. [1:58:10] on instagram but it's just mostly schizophrenics like people that tell me that the rightful president of the united states and like you tell the guy hasn't showered in days and you know and if you have a phone you can create an account and you just start uploading nonsense and then for whatever reason i've watched a couple of them so now they just keep showing them to me and it's full of ai slop right now like a lot of ai slop like it's not even clear [1:58:34] And it's not labeled also clearly whether it's being made with AI or not. So often... [1:58:39] So essentially it's leading to a complete loss in trust where when I see something, I don't even know if it's real anymore. Right. Right. [1:58:46] And it's going to get worse. Yeah, it's going to get worse. To the extent that you're going to like... [1:58:50] Your default would be that this is AI. [1:58:53] And then, like, you're going to have to go through multiple layers to finally verify if it was real. [1:59:01] And – [1:59:03] And even, like, verified accounts post a lot of AI stuff. So it's not about, like, whether the account is verified by Meta or whatever, right? So I think... [1:59:13] fundamentally, I feel like, okay, the way I think about it is,
[1:59:17] What are pieces of technology that did not exist? [1:59:21] would be a really bad thing for the world. And water pieces of technology, if it did not exist, wouldn't even matter. [1:59:28] And I feel like social media is more towards the second. [1:59:33] Yeah. [1:59:33] Like, [1:59:34] you know. [1:59:35] searching for information and answering questions and like getting, [1:59:39] you know [1:59:40] AIs to do things for you. [1:59:42] help you learn new things faster. All that stuff is some, we need more of that. [1:59:47] But because it supercharges our curiosity. [1:59:51] Whereas like brain rot feeds with AI slop [1:59:54] doesn't actually supercharge our curiosity. It actually curbs our curiosity. And so if we believe in the curiosity premium idea, [2:00:03] We need to encourage things that supercharge our curiosity and discourage things that curb our curiosity. [2:00:09] And [2:00:10] Do you anticipate a time where we recognize the dangers of algorithms and there is some discussion to either curb them or allow people to have control over them in a real meaningful way? Like you could dictate maybe through AI even that there's an AI interface to your algorithm that understands your particular emotional needs, your curiosity. Like only show me this. This is what I'm interested in. Carpentry and basketball games. Show me those things. Yeah. [2:00:40] who's getting divorced. I don't give a fuck about this. [2:00:43] Yeah. So here's the thing. You can still customize on most of these social apps –
[2:00:50] It'll be deeply buried somewhere in the settings somewhere. [2:00:54] and you can go and say stuff. But the reason it's buried is because once you... [2:00:58] you always have to say it or like it's the starting entry point for your experience there. [2:01:03] your engagement time would go down because once you consume the content that you really want, you would go back to your work, which is what you really need to be doing. Right. But that doesn't help them sell more ads. Right. Right. [2:01:13] And so the incentives are not aligned. [2:01:16] Thank you. [2:01:34] But this metric is also why it's hard to make money on ads if you care about this metric. Which is why X doesn't really make a lot of money on ads compared to... [2:01:42] you know, Instagram or YouTube. Right. Because, um, [2:01:46] you're kind of like optimizing for... [2:01:48] interestingness like [2:01:50] doesn't mean X has everything right there's a lot of chaos there's a lot of memes there's a lot of like [2:01:54] weird shit going on there as well. [2:01:57] But in general, social media is not necessarily like... [2:02:01] Great for people. [2:02:02] I think it's terrible for people. But it also provides you with a way better understanding of what's going on in the world than has ever existed before. X particularly. X particularly. Because it's – [2:02:16] It's a place for discourse. [2:02:18] It's a text-based app more than a video-based app. Right. Right.
[2:02:22] so um... [2:02:24] Naturally, people tend to engage in discussions and debates, and there's a lot of curious debates going on there and a lot of interesting viewpoints expressed by people. [2:02:32] So I think [2:02:33] in terms of the unregreted minutes, it's actually one of the better social media apps. But apps that are purely based on, like, video, right? [2:02:42] or images. [2:02:44] a larger video these days. I think that's just trying to get your... [2:02:48] eyeballs and time. Yeah, those are the mind numbers. Yeah. [2:02:52] They just numb your mind. I mean, it's depressing when you go to a metro and you just see people just scrolling through their feed. [2:02:57] Nobody – Everybody doing it. You look the entire car. Everyone's doing it. It's just insane. Yeah. It's weird. Yeah. I always say that if there was a drug that existed that made people stare at their hand for six hours a day, everybody would be like, get that out of here. Yeah. But that's essentially what we're doing because like most of what people are looking at most of the time, they don't even remember. [2:03:16] Yeah. I go, what's everybody mad at? What's going on? Who stole this? How much corruption is here? Who got killed there? Okay, bye. And then I just check out. I don't want to do it. And Instagram to me is just nonsense. I just look at that every now and then for nonsense and occasionally something interesting.
[2:04:01] because YouTube is my most unregretted minutes. YouTube for me is always interesting. There's always some cool thing on cosmology. I watch fights on YouTube. I watch professional pool matches. That's what I do for the most part. That's where I really find my actual interests and fulfill my curiosity. Long-form content is what human mind should be trained to consume more of, whether it's books, whether it's like... [2:04:30] You know, like 30-minute videos explaining something. Mm-hmm. [2:04:34] And you need to train your mind to actually complete it. That's actually the biggest problem of the younger generation. [2:04:41] They're on the reels experience, short-form video. [2:04:44] they're unable to actually like [2:04:46] complete like long videos anymore that's true but also at the same time the rise of podcasts is happening yeah [2:04:54] And it's great. It's great. So it's not universal. It's like there's a lot of people that don't find fulfillment in all the doomscrolling and all the nonsense. And they really do want – Yeah. I'm particularly just – [2:05:05] focused on the younger generation i'm sure like people like us can adapt like okay let's say maybe you have a temporary addiction to social apps and we can but a lot of the young people are the people like i meet kids like at the mall that are 11 that listen to my podcast really yeah wow i know it's nuts [2:05:22] They go, I love your podcast. I'm like, who lets you listen? Get out of here. [2:05:28] No, I'm always joking around about it. But that's really cool. But no, there's a lot of particularly young boys that come up to me all the time that are interested in it.

Where they're talking about different tactics in hunting or different techniques in archery, new equipment and new innovations. Physicists point out that the heart's magnetic field is a million times weaker than the Earth's. [2:16:05] Detecting it at a range of miles rather than centimeters defies currently published peer-reviewed physics. [2:16:12] alternative explanations suspect that while quantum sensors were likely on board they're probably tracking the radio waves of a survival beacon [2:16:21] the metal in the pilot's equipment, or using traditional thermal, infrared, and radar capabilities rather than detecting a raw heartbeat via magnetic fields. I do remember seeing a different part of a – when that story happened back in April, someone did report on one of the military websites that there was a survival beacon that they used to track them.

[2:18:30] version where he said, "Okay, like, [2:18:33] the radiologist thing if okay if all radiologists can take away you know they start doing different kind of work so i think we need to start looking at like okay like [2:18:42] Okay, first of all, guys, relax. You have one... [2:18:45] premium skill, your curiosity. So let's figure out ways to channelize that. Let's change the way work is done in companies. Let's change the way educational institutions run. [2:18:54] Let's change the incentive structures. [2:18:56] And let's help you build new ideas and new companies. [2:18:59] and explore things that are not even being considered. [2:19:02] And the government should obviously support all these initiatives. So that's what needs to happen more. [2:19:08] But what's happening actually right now is... [2:19:11] Okay, like, hey, guys, you're all losers. You're going to lose your jobs. [2:19:14] And don't blame me. Instead of giving them an understanding of like, look, this can open up new doors for you. Yeah. And anytime there's any sort of disruptive technology, there's always the fear that it's going to go badly. Yeah. This was the case with the locomotive. This was the case with – Yeah. When the printing press was invented. Yeah. Yeah.

[2:20:06] Okay like [2:20:08] For example, when the Industrial Revolution happened, [2:20:12] Who came up with the idea of a steel plow? John Deere. [2:20:15] Until then, we were using wooden plows to, like... [2:20:17] for farming. [2:20:19] No farmer complained that, hey, like... [2:20:21] We need fewer farmers now because steel plows are able to do it more effectively. No one complained. [2:20:27] you actually had more farms and more productivity, more crop yields and [2:20:31] you're happier. [2:20:32] But isn't that just a regular tool? [2:20:34] as opposed to AI. [2:20:35] Sure, AI is different. [2:20:38] It's not overnight going to become something... [2:20:41] that's capable of just running an entire [2:20:43] multi-trillion dollar company on its own. [2:20:46] There are a lot of things that AIs cannot do. There's a lot of tacit knowledge in every company. [2:20:50] that AIs don't quite understand. And there's a lot of [2:20:53] new directions that you can just start working on. [2:20:56] that AIs are not well equipped to do because it doesn't have full knowledge about it, and the knowledge about it is yet to be captured. [2:21:02] And some of that requires human-to-human work and collaboration. [2:21:06] So we obviously have to gravitate towards what is scarce. [2:21:09] When AI makes the current labor that's considered scarce because that's where the money is going in, [2:21:15] commodity [2:21:16] then we have to gravitate towards what is scarce. [2:21:20] And the only way to do that is to seek things that we don't know about. [2:21:25] which is only... [2:21:27] something we can discover through our curiosity. There's nothing else.
[2:21:30] Whatever we don't quite understand well, [2:21:32] Whatever we don't know how to do well yet... [2:21:35] even with the current capabilities of AI. [2:21:37] That's where we should [2:21:39] pull our labor and workforce into. [2:21:42] So it needs more responsible messaging. [2:21:44] and that's not [2:21:46] quite happening right now. [2:21:47] I think it needs responsible messaging and then in the future what it needs is like real – [2:21:52] direction. [2:21:54] In terms of like letting people find their curiosity and find these paths of interest and find something to do with themselves. It doesn't involve whatever their previous occupation that's irrelevant now. [2:22:09] That's true. [2:22:11] I think passion for people is something that not a lot of people will be able to answer. [2:22:15] out of the box. [2:22:17] If you go and ask them, what is your real passion? [2:22:19] And the only thing they've known in life is to just climb up career ladders and make more money. [2:22:25] That's going to actually take them a while to even discover. [2:22:29] Right. Which is why it's so important to get kids off on the right start. Yeah. That's the hope. That's our hope for the future is the kids. The kids are born curious. [2:22:39] They don't need to change themselves to be curious. Right. The adults who probably already are like... [2:22:45] Because of this knowledge work thing. [2:22:48] who kind of curb their curiosity and try to fit into the existing system. [2:22:52] it might be a little hard for them to adapt. [2:23:10] Some form of it is good. [2:23:12] It's like a dividend. I almost think of it as a dividend. [2:23:16] If a lot of spend... [2:23:18] that most companies are currently doing today on like payroll which is paying [2:23:22] a knowledge worker for a certain task. [2:23:24] Think of knowledge work as basically taking information and transforming it into a [2:23:29] an artifact. [2:23:30] Right. [2:23:31] And it's messy and complicated. Let's assume that's being done by AIs. So obviously companies will start spending more on compute instead of payroll. [2:23:40] It's just a reallocation of like spend or budget. Similar to like what happened in advertising industries where most of your advertising budgets went to like, [2:23:48] television and like billboards and then now it's starting to go to google and instagram and youtube and all that so um [2:23:57] When that happens, obviously, like... [2:24:00] the AI companies are going to make a lot of money, [2:24:03] and people who helped [2:24:05] be part of creating it or in either directly or indirectly would want [2:24:09] to have some role to play in that. [2:24:12] ecosystem. [2:24:13] And a good way to involve them is through giving them some ownership in the company. [2:24:17] So a shareholder's [2:24:19] if you get dividends from the profits generated by the AIs, [2:24:23] It's not a bad thing. [2:24:24] But that shouldn't be the only thing. [2:24:27] Right, so this is similar to people that live in Alaska. They get a check. Correct. Alaska does this.
[2:24:33] and it's not a bad thing [2:24:35] As long as they are doing some other things. [2:24:37] Right. Alongside. [2:24:39] It could lessen the burden. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. And if people are interested in still being part of the AI industries, they go do things that AIs are not able to do today. [2:24:49] And that's been the case before. When Industrial Revolution started... [2:24:54] The United Kingdom actually started projects around building railroads. [2:25:00] And that gave a lot of people who are in the cottage industries new jobs. [2:25:05] So there are going to be a lot of new projects to just look like [2:25:08] What if we want to reimagine the government itself, where the government runs largely on AI? [2:25:13] Yeah, that was my next question. Yeah. So then we need people for that. Yeah. Because this is a legacy industry. It's not about the capabilities not being there. [2:25:23] It's about working through the legacy and bureaucracy to, like... [2:25:27] actually deploy and implement this. [2:25:30] inside the most like largest institutions in the country. And that's going to need [2:25:36] a new set of [2:25:38] skilled workers to go do that. So some people who might be working at Microsoft or something today might actually end up working for the United States government. [2:25:45] Because... [2:25:46] Microsoft may not need them, especially for like, you know, internally deploying AI or selling AI to their customers, but the government needs them. [2:25:53] And if the government can pay them [2:25:55] well and it's a fulfilling job to find some meaning for doing something good for the country. It's not a bad thing. [2:26:01] So I think like just like in the Industrial Revolution where we had new projects because the demand for AI was so big.
[2:26:09] We're going to start seeing some new projects being created in AI as well when the capabilities advance enough that they can replace knowledge workers. [2:26:16] That's the rosy scenario. [2:26:19] It's not as rosy. Like, real world is messy. [2:26:23] A lot of things are still done through trusting other human beings. [2:26:27] Nobody is blindly trusting AIs. AIs still make a lot of mistakes. [2:26:31] I know a lot of people are hesitant to the idea of AI running government, and I get it. [2:26:36] but also... [2:26:37] Look at what the people are doing. [2:26:39] Look at how much corruption there is, how much fraud and waste. Imagine if all fraud, waste, and corruption was instantaneously eliminated. [2:26:46] Yeah. [2:26:47] I mean, that was what Elon tried to do with Doge. Right. And I think the bottleneck there was just discovering how slow... [2:26:55] It is to do things. He's not used to running that slow. Yeah. Also, how much resistance. Yeah, resistance. Because there was so much grift. Correct. [2:27:03] Yeah, so... [2:27:05] Honestly, like, [2:27:07] More than AI, the government is running a lot of legacy software stack. [2:27:11] because a lot of these legacy enterprise companies just [2:27:15] have created these multi-decade or like year contracts that are hard to get out of [2:27:20] And the way they do that is to sell it at a much larger discount. [2:27:25] And if you're on a specific OS, you're not allowed to change this for like [2:27:29] 10 years. [2:27:30] You have to use the same sort of software. All the people you hired only know to use that tool. [2:27:36] So it takes time to actually change and implement new things, leave alone AI. If you just wanted to move everybody from Windows machines to Mac machines,
[2:27:45] Good luck with that. It's going to take a lot of time. That's the state of the [2:27:50] the system. [2:27:51] And so that has nothing to do with technology. [2:27:54] And so to do things in such messy systems, you still need people. [2:27:59] Still need people to navigate all these. [2:28:02] changes. [2:28:03] It's not about the capability of technology, it's more about how the system is structured. [2:28:08] And that's why I still feel there will be new jobs. [2:28:12] Maybe there's a lot of new projects to be done. Maybe some good leader actually wants to change the system. [2:28:18] and is willing to be patient about it, like... [2:28:20] You know, over a five to ten year horizon, [2:28:23] If you take 10 years to actually run majority of the government processes on AIs, [2:28:28] It may seem slow to you today, but... [2:28:30] In the grand scheme of things, it's actually good for the country. [2:28:33] And that's still going to need a lot of... [2:28:36] nice engineers to go work on these projects. [2:28:38] So they're not going to lose all their jobs. There's going to be some displacement. There's going to be some new projects. There's going to be new priorities. But it'll keep going. The system will keep going because that's just how historically things have been. [2:28:51] When you think about the future of AI and you think of this – [2:28:56] the [2:28:57] So what do you think about AGI in particular? Do you think about... [2:29:01] something that could potentially make better versions of itself. [2:29:05] Self-replicating. Yeah. And then how far does it go? Yeah. So that is the ultimate form of... [2:29:13] I think some people in Silicon Valley have started calling that ASI.
[2:29:18] So when you see the word ASI being thrown around, like... [2:29:21] People kind of think of ASI as an AGI that can recursively self-improve itself. [2:29:28] So that's going to be no limits to how smart it can get. Right. And... [2:29:35] I used to think that ASI... [2:29:37] is bottlenecked by power because... [2:29:39] You need a ton of compute for this model to [2:29:42] keep on training itself and running its own rollouts and collecting data and then going and updating itself. But you could imagine that once the algorithm is correct... [2:29:52] the ASI could be tasked with just making itself more efficient too. [2:29:57] where improvement doesn't just mean capability improvement. Improvement could also mean power efficiency. [2:30:02] So [2:30:02] and that way the recursive safe ASI that [2:30:07] is improving itself also makes itself more compact and more efficient. [2:30:11] and you can run on less compute. [2:30:12] Thank you. [2:30:13] So that would be the ultimate project in AI. Think of it as almost as the last project in AI is basically cracking recursive self-improvement. [2:30:20] Once you crack that, you don't have anything else to work on. In practice, I think what's going to happen is... [2:30:26] because information is so muddled and fragmented and [2:30:30] living in disjoint systems just the way we have constructed our messy real world [2:30:34] Thank you. [2:30:35] It's going to be hard to point even a recursively self-improving AI at some metric and say, go improve this. [2:30:41] Or go reduce inflation by 5%. [2:30:44] That would be awesome if you can task an AI to do that. If that's the job of the government to just reduce inflation,
[2:30:49] have a deflationary effect [2:30:51] on society and make goods and services a lot more abundant and efficient. [2:30:57] It's going to have to deal with a lot of messy legacy systems. [2:31:00] If the task is to go improve the health care, [2:31:03] for good luck, like... [2:31:04] Who's going to deal with all the compliance of actually... [2:31:07] implementing these changes inside hospitals, [2:31:10] Most hospitals are still using legacy software because the software provider has lobbied the government in a way where only they're allowed to do that. God, what a stupid bottleneck. Exactly. So a lot of the bottlenecks in actually having AIs just take over and massively improve the human society and our hospitals, our legal systems, our government systems. [2:31:34] where most of the payroll is going into. [2:31:37] Is this bottleneck by a lot of compliance and regulation? [2:31:40] And so that's why I feel... [2:31:43] the human beings are still necessary to effect the change. [2:31:46] because these laws and regulations were built for us. [2:31:50] It also seems like we have to demand that those systems be usurped [2:31:54] Sure, 100%. And we need the help of AIs to rewrite all these laws. [2:31:59] It's going to be humanly impossible to go and change... [2:32:02] one specific line here and there. Right. And then you're going to have a bunch of these software companies that are lobbying to try to stop that from happening. Exactly. Yeah. That's why like this messiness. [2:32:13] And this need for getting all people on the same page and actually steering the society in a positive way, [2:32:19] our jobs will probably be more steered towards that problem-solving process
[2:32:23] at a different level of abstraction, maybe more need for EQ [2:32:27] more need for actually like [2:32:29] understanding [2:32:30] differences of opinion and still like [2:32:33] Leadership quality, [2:32:35] ability to understand people, [2:32:37] and ability to convince people [2:32:40] These are the skills that will be even more important in the world where like actual work can be done by AIs. [2:32:47] but effecting the change in our society [2:32:51] in our country still needs human beings. [2:32:53] because the systems are messy. [2:32:56] Thank you. [2:32:58] It's a weird world we're in right now. Yeah. Yeah. [2:33:00] It's never been weirder. That said, there's a lot of things that can still go wrong when you give so much power to [2:33:08] to... [2:33:09] you know, like specific companies. [2:33:11] and they deploy all these bots and then [2:33:14] Anybody can use them in weird ways. You don't even know if you're talking to a real person anymore. Right? [2:33:21] They're like people who just run AI responses and chat with like 500 people at once. [2:33:27] and that's like a whole business. [2:33:29] And so... [2:33:31] I think it's going to take a lot of adjustment. [2:33:34] Well, another piece of adjustment that a lot of people are coming to grips with is that this is a new part of our conversation in that – [2:33:41] in 2020, like when I first moved here, AI was never discussed. It was not a thing. [2:33:47] I mean, we knew about it. We knew about AI. But it wasn't like you – [2:33:51] It wasn't [2:33:52] a huge part of the cultural discussion of what the future holds for us.
[2:33:57] Now it is. It is central. And in that short amount of time, in just six years, it really makes you wonder because we know how – [2:34:05] technology progresses exponentially, what it's going to look like six years from now. [2:34:11] Like, definitely my prediction is 2028 election debates are going to be largely about AI. Wow. [2:34:18] Yeah. [2:34:20] AI, energy crisis, [2:34:22] Power, power... [2:34:25] that people are going to care about all these things. [2:34:28] Because AI is no longer a thing that is new. It's part of all our lives. Everyone's using some form of AI in some ways. [2:34:38] It's not as dangerous as people thought. [2:34:40] It's an amazing tool for doing work and asking questions and learning things and all these things. When used correctly. Yeah. Yeah. [2:34:48] It can also be used incorrectly. [2:34:49] Like everything. [2:34:51] like everything. So it's far more powerful that incorrect usage can cause serious damage [2:34:57] Yeah. [2:34:58] Like, for example, kids who are using AIs for... [2:35:01] like companionship. [2:35:03] Right. Crazy things are happening there. Crazy things are happening. Not good. Yeah. It's even, it's as dangerous as... [2:35:09] or probably more dangerous than social media. [2:35:12] And it's also scary that social media companies want to build more of these kind of like... [2:35:17] companionship apps. [2:35:19] Because they know that, okay, their only job is to get you engaged more, and that's the only way to sell more ads and make more money.
[2:35:27] And clearly companionship is a way to get you engaged more. [2:35:30] Yeah. [2:35:31] And so that's dangerous if ads start being part of like [2:35:36] AI chats. [2:35:37] Yeah. Because then if that ends up working... [2:35:40] then all these chatbots are just going to be sycophants that just... [2:35:46] Tell you stuff that you want to hear. It's also an indistinguishable facsimile to a real person. Like they communicate like a real person. Right. So you really think you have a relationship with this. Right. Right. [2:35:59] And it truly screws with your mind. [2:36:03] it's hard to, like, decouple, and, like, it takes a lot of time to recover if you want to, like, [2:36:08] you know unplug [2:36:10] And so the business model incentives are not well aligned to humanity. Did you see that... [2:36:15] AI companion that they developed that was at the consumer electronics show in Vegas this year. [2:36:21] Which one? It's like a hot Asian lady. I see. Yeah. These are the weird kind of projects that are going on. Yeah. It's a hot Asian lady that talks to you. Yeah. And she talks to you through AI. And right now, it's just a kind of a crude sort of robot. But you can see where it's going. You can see where it's going. Ex machina. [2:36:42] Yeah. It's gone... [2:36:43] Yeah. [2:36:44] Right there. [2:36:45] Yeah, that movie was... [2:36:47] Amazing. Quite far ahead of its time. Really? Yeah. That's one of my top ten favorite movies of all time. It's underrated, actually, because reviews online say it's not as good, but I liked it. I loved it. Yeah. I thought it was fantastic. I like it better than her.
[2:37:02] Yeah, I lost her after a while. I shut it off. [2:37:06] I lost my attention I'm sure it's good it was the wrong time for me to watch it yeah but Ex Machina I've seen it like five times I fucking love that movie [2:37:15] It's just so... [2:37:17] I don't want to give anything away, but it's so incredible and so bleak and so – [2:37:22] In the relationship that he has with the hot one. Yeah. You believe it. You're like, I'd be right there with him. It's too confusing to our system to have something that looks exactly like the thing that you desire that is actually interested in you. It just happens to be. Because it pulls all your data. Yeah. Knows too much about you. Knows how to pull your strings. Yeah. Yeah. [2:37:43] Yeah. [2:37:44] But listen, man.
